Please explain the second method

I do not understand why using ‘e + esc’ just worked. Please explain it.

Not sure what the context is!

But what you do is extruding e. And by escaping esc leaving the copy (face, edge, vertices) exactly on the same spot.

With extrude only you are in de drag mode, esc stops this.

Having an edge on the same spot, can be used to force a sharp corner, after applying the sub-surface-modifier.. Sub-surface smooths everything out. But when edges are close to each other, there is no room for smoothing (small place), so it becomes sharp.

Thanks for responding. So extruding does not necessarily make new geometry? Does it just disconnect the selected geometry from anything attached to it?

It does, in case of pressing the esc-key, after the e-key of extruding. But you don’t see it immediately, because the duplicates vertices are on the same spot. You aborted only the move action.
And it is still connected to the other mesh!
