My queen

My reference did not have points on her crown, but I put them in anyway to get the practice. I tried several different way that none worked the way that I liked, so I deleted and was going to leave it rounded, but then watching the video, extracting and scaling to 0 gave me this nice look, and so I kept it.

The subdivision modifier has given me some issues, but so far I’ve been able to work them out. Knight and king is going to be rough, I think.

What was / is the problem?

Getting things to form correctly when the subdivision modifier is applied. Getting the creases where I want them, and the points formed correctly with those creases. Figuring out where to make a hard crease, and where not to, and how the topology effects the outcome.

I’ve never been a big user of subdivision, keeping to low poly for game assets, so I’m trying to challenge myself by using it on the chess pieces.

It’s important to have good topology, meaning quads!
Then you can add extra loops to make edges sharper.
Or use the edge bevel operator.
You can also mark individual edges as sharp, and give a % of sharpness.

It’s a learning curve. Have fun!
