My low poly airplane + 3d print

I actually made a couple of these since the first one didn’t look quite the way I wanted it to. First one kind of looks more like a bird to me though.

Bonus! Since one of my goals is to make my own models for 3d printing, I wanted to try printing my plane just to see how it would turn out. As you might notice, there are a couple problems with it (it certainly wouldn’t fly) but at least most of it is there :slight_smile:

That’s pretty neat! What kind of 3D printer do you have? I was looking to get one as I like to mess around with my RC planes and helis and Blender would just expedite the process of fixing stuff instead of jury rigging everything haha.

I use a Micro 3D, which is hooked up to a raspberry pi running octoprint - I was originally running it off a laptop but didn’t really like having to leave my computer on all the time. It’s a decent printer for the price though I’m currently looking to upgrade to a Prusa i3, partly for print time/quality and primarily for print size.

If you’re looking to buy a printer I’d recommend keeping these few factors in mind:

  • Print volume - make sure the print bed is large enough. I’ve found the M3D to be a little smaller than I’d like, personally, but it depends on what you need (I can imagine RC parts might have trouble fitting on the M3D print bed, though admittedly I don’t really know what sizes you’ll need to print)
  • Print speed - maybe not the most important, but something to keep in mind
  • Independent - can you start a print then disconnect the computer? I actually ran into trouble once here because Windows decided to automatically reboot for me in the middle of a print.
  • Precision - basically how good is the print quality? You can still get good functional prints off lower resolutions but if you need more detail then you might want to go higher.

There are probably articles that can explain it better than me, but in my experience I’ve found the above things to be more important considerations for me personally (particularly the print volume).

That’s incredibly helpful, thank you. I am 90% interested in one for printing off little toys and things to fix stuff up around the house and 10% interested in it for RC parts, anyhow. They wouldn’t be anything too big, just parts that will help me attach parts I’ve already bought haha. I’ll look into the Micro 3Ds when my cash flow permits!
