My First Ever Game!

Hey everybody! I started my coding journey last year with this course. After I completed the 2D section of the course I thought I would try my own little project as some extra practice. After some time I thought I had something decent and decided to spruce it up and I ended up with something I thought I could release to the public. Anyway here it is!

Android (Google Play)

Itch.io (Browser)

It’s also on Facebook Gameroom and the Facebook website (though it only works with Safari and IE apparently).

Hope you enjoy it, moving on from this project now and on to some other games!

I find the game mechanic rather convoluted and not very intuitive. I’ve went back and looked at the feeding rules multiple times and it’s still a bit confusing. I have to give a different colour of candy to a character ie a blue candy to a red character etc. That character then has to be linked to another character of the same type as it and the same colour as the candy? Is that right?

My worry would be that mobile games are targeted at a very casual market for the most part. While I’ll sit here and think about combinations and how to rationalise the game mechanic most people will just try it a few times, not get it and just give up playing your game. Which is clearly not a great outcome.

I’d suggest scaling back the first few levels(and increasing the level timer). Have just 1 type of character such as the cat(everyone loves cats right?) . The player just needs to focus on the colour element of matching. After a few levels you then bring in the other characters 1 at a time to introduce this mechanic. That way a player isn’t being overwhelmed.

I’d also suggest better player feedback as to why a match doesn’t work. Maybe have the character vomit if it’s fed the wrong colour of candy and have it run away in fright if the wrong character tries to feed it. Something so the player can understand WHY the match doesn’t work.

I hope that was somewhat constructive feedback  Its a solid game that already feels rather polished.

UWP Version? :stuck_out_tongue: i not have Android pffffffffff to mainstream xD

But i played the Browser Version.
How @Martyn_Stewart art said the game mechanic issnt clear and someone like me kinda lazy to read instructions i tried around 10 games until i understand what i had to do xD
Its very hard for someone new in this game to get fast inside even the mechanics are very simple.

The Graphics looks nice, they are candy in my eyes. The Gameplay if you was able to understand, is challenging and nice perhaps some different timers (difficulty) would be very nice.

Only few seconds to fed ahhh… little bit boring how many you can fed in 2 minutes?
Not make it to long, because the player can feel like stuck.

Overall i like your game and i not saw something like that before.

Good Job, Keep Going

I’ve received a lot of feedback regarding the tutorial being very confusing!

So the idea is that:

a cat can only feed a cat
a robot can only feed a robot
a zombie only feed a zombie

To make a good feed the candy color has to match the color of the character being fed.

eg. I hand a piece of blue candy to a cat (CAT X) to hold. CAT X’s color is irrelevant. I then drag CAT X and the candy it’s holding over to a cat that is blue (BLUE CAT). This results in a good feed because CAT X is feeding BLUE CAT a blue candy.

It is quite confusing and I think I do need to have a better introduction in the game mechanics. I will probably implement the ideas you have listed. I may even tweak the mechanics to simplify the game more.

The player feedback for different type of failures is actually a nice idea. I didn’t actually create any of the assets though. I downloaded them all and so a lot of the game has been limited to what i have available to me.

Thank you for the amazing feedback though! I was pretty much done with this game and wanted to move on but I’ll be spending an extra week on it instead because the feedback massively motivates me!

Haha sorry about this I completed forgot about UWP version! If it’s simple enough I’ll do it! I was hoping to release it on iOS aswell but I can’t afford the developers costs at this moment.

You’re right! The feedback I have got have all commented on the poor tutorial and confusing instructions. I’ll try and find a way to make this clearer!

Thanks, can’t take credit for the graphics! They were all amazing free assets online! I will need to add some kind of thankyou/credits page.

I’ve actually considered a Blitz mode where you have 1 minute to score as many as possible. If time permits I might release it as a separate app altogether!

Thankyou! It’s nice to hear that you played something unique even if it has some confusing mechanics and dodgy instructions!

Ah by the way because im close to release my first Game to and i wanted to release on UWP because i have 2 Windows Phones and lot of Windows Desktops but nothing else :frowning:

If you want to release on UWP you have to register and pay a register Fee.
For Students, Privates or Groups the register Fee is around 14€ (depends on Country)
For Companys its around 75€ (depends on Country)

Here the Link if you interested https://developer.microsoft.com/en-us/store/register

depends on the Game you wanna release its the same procedure like on Android or IOS.
Actually i build my game that it fits for Every Plattform, im using GameSpark as Cloud Service to save my Datas, with Gamespark u have the addition that you can access to all Plattforms.

Sorry for the very late reply!

I decided to release it on UWP! Surprisingly easy compared to issues I’ve had on other platforms!

I’ll take a look at GameSpark. I tried using Google Play Services but it ended up completely breaking my game and endless errors that resulted in my completely abandoning all the features it came with.

Thanks for the great feedback!

Forgot to mention the updates I’ve made to the game based on feedback.

I redesigned the tutorial and tried to make it simpler to follow with much less text. Whether this is easier to follow or not I’m not sure.

Also mechanics have changed to make the game easier and more satisfying.

  • Munchers that feed another Muncher of the same type = GOOD FEED (+1 sec to clock)… but:

  • if the Muncher being fed is the same color as the Candy = PERFECT FEED (+2 sec to clock)

  • if the Munchers are not the same type = BAD FEED (-2 sec to clock)

Medals have also been added/changed to adapt to the new mechanics.

So relieved to have finally completed this project after such a long time and way too much procrastination!
Time for a new challenge
