Tried to make it look like a late night chess table in a dark corner of a bar or chess club.

What do you think of the white tile material?

Still not sure about that.
I was thinking of either leaving it completely white or using a texture similar to the marble that was used in the course but i didn’t like the large black lines that went across so i scaled it very small and there you can see the result.
The reference material i was using had black pieces and dark brown pieces and black and dark brown squares but i felt like it was too dark.

Very nice scene, and chess set.
On the squares texture issue for me it is also the mixing of wood and a stone like material that jars. Either 2 stone materials or 2 wood ones for me.
Could just invert the white and black of the stone, might look good.

I like the way you think, because for me, in the last “from the top” view, the matching wood squares and table textures, make it look like those squares are either missing, or transparent.
I think your idea of inverting the white and black texture of the stone squares might just do the trick nicely.
