I just installed the exact version used in the course (2020.1.1f1) and it works fine now. Something changed in the Input System making that code not work in later versions. On my Mac anyway.
I’m glad you found a solution. Unfortunately, bugs are not uncommon in Unity. If in doubt, use the version the respective instructor uses in the course.
