I cut the hole in the arm by making new edge loops, deleting the face, and then bridging the edges. I really wanted to do a boolean difference using a duplicate of the arm scaled down a bit but just couldn’t get it to work right. I had trouble with the boolean difference on the bishop in the low-poly chess section as well. anyone else having problems with that operation?
I am. Sometimes it works, other times it doesn’t. I still don’t know why.
I did some googling and it looks like the biggest cause of boolean difference not working is double verts and flipped normals. I went back to my model and did a remove doubles on both the arm and the drilling geomatry. a total of 16 verts were removed and the boolean operation worked fine.
