I made the pawn by extruding the edges, including the top sphere. I thought about add a uv esphere, But I modeled the sphere just adding loops and basing myself on the reference.
I decided to make different blender files.

All looks good.
The head part in the course was probably designed to teach you how to joins parts. But as a way to make the whole thing it is fine to do it the way you did.
