Once I opened up another 3d view in orthographic mode it became easier.I was doing it in 3d perspective and it was a nightmare! Like a whack-a-mole context moving control points instead of whacking moles.
I have included the lamp I am trying to copy, photo off the web.

I seem to be having issues with understanding how curves work. Guess I really am going to have to practice to keep up!
