Is there any way to stop blender form crashing?

It’s probably not a Blender issue but hardware-related. Not enough memory.

Are you sculpting, watch your vertices count. Like you have two squirrels.
Metaballs is a calculation-intensive method.
And normally, people using the sculpt tool. And use the metaballs for a quick setup and jump over to the sculpt tool.

As Fed Pete says it is likely to be a computer resources issue.
Have you really got two more squirrel models in the file?
You could get a slightly later version of Blender as bugs are quickly fixed if there are any. It is rarely a Blender issue.

See FedPete’s image that is what I saw. Now it might be that they contain little or nothing but we can only go on what we See.
