Introduction + Question about Topic Categories

Hello, everyone!

Glad to have joined the community! My name is Gabriel Hanna, and I am more than excited to be starting the Unreal Engine C++ Developer course with Ben Tristem and Gavin Milroy.

My Career So Far

My academic career in software development started in my junior year of high school in the fall of 2015 through dual-enrollment classes with a very nearby community college. That’s when I became interested in the C# language and realized my skill in programming. Over the summers after, I also picked up C, C++, Python, HTML, CSS, JavaScript, Markdown, and even attempted making my own interpreter once.

However, my interest in games and game development began when I was playing computer games at four years old. In the years to come, I would also jot down concepts for games involving various fictional characters, which were inspired by other games I happened to get my hands on. Since then, these ideas, as well as new ones, only continued to develop. (Recently joining semi-frequent Dungeons and Dragons sessions contributed to this passion as well.)

My Interest In This Course

I was excited to see this course because it combined these two deep-seated interests (Programming Languages and Game Design). I did join the course six months ago, but I didn’t pursue it frequently and didn’t become an active community member until now. Though, I am glad I am getting into what I missed earlier.

As I prepare for my future beyond a college degree in software development, I have some ideas prepared that I want to make in Unreal over the summer. Granted, developing an entire game is a challenging task, but I will be more concerned with the programming aspects of the subject for the projects in this course.

Conclusion

I don’t claim to be a C++ expert, but I tend to pick up syntax rules fairly quickly and am willing to lend a hand to anyone should they want it.

Overall, I look forward to learning with the rest of you in this amazing, Unreal journey.

Question on Topic Categories

Perceived Problem

When I used this community topic writer to make this post, I experienced some issues selecting the “Category…” for this topic. After selecting the “Unreal Courses - Talk” option for the topic, this value didn’t appear in the category field; it just said “category…”.

After selecting any category with the word “Unreal” in it, I get this:

What I understand

I am led to assume that I was successful in selecting the option I wanted because I can see the option in a green cursor when I click the dropdown.

Actual Problem

I don’t believe this effects my ability to select a category, but it is aggravating to keep seeing the category field unpopulated. Does anyone know what could be causing the issue? From what I understand, maybe my browser might have something to do with it. Do those of you who use Chrome experience this issue too?

Some help is appreciated, but I understand that there are obviously more pressing questions out there.
