I'm having a problem viewing a Blender video

I don’t believe it’s the video itself, but I was in the middle of viewing it and working in my Blender 2.79, trying to redo, and update, all the projects in the Complete Blender Creator course I originally did back in 2016 and 2017. This happened once a week or so ago, but I was able to get passed it but forgot to make a note in case it happened again.

Anyway, has anyone had the sound turn off suddenly, even though it shows the sound is on fully on the video, and my laptop says the sound is on at a nice level (not muted)? I’m kicking myself for not making a note the last time this happened, but now I can’t continue with any of the videos. :slightly_frowning_face:

Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

Are you doing the Old 2.7 course again on Udemy?

I doubt many look at it so there may be no experience about of the problem.

3 am I will leave this for FedPete to catch in the morning.

Probably needs someone computery.

Yes, I got the archived version when Udemy offered it, as I knew there were parts of it I wanted to try again, now that I’ve had more time playing with it.

Thanks for responding, and hopefully @FedPete will have some idea of what I did, probably pressing a couple of keys I shouldn’t have, that caused this to happen.

I must say, I don’t see that much instruction lessons any more on Udemy.
But, back in those days, I struggled sometimes to get a video running (Win7).

My impression was something about browser and or the user account.
Like halfway the system wouldn’t let me access the video …

I switched browsers back and forth (Firefox vs Chrome).
Cleared browser cache (reload webpage (F5).
Closed browser sessions.
Booted the complete machine.

One of these steps made things working again. But I can not say, this is the magical one … Let us know your progress.

Well, I can tell you I’ve tried them all, EXCEPT another browser, so I’ll try that and see what happens.

As far as clearing my browser cache, I do that (among other things) to clean out the daily “garbage” before logging off for the night. I also tried closing the browser, and tried rebooting, and nothing seemed to work.

I just wish I had written a note last time, because I remember thinking . . . “why didn’t I think of that” when I did get the sound working again. I just “think” there was some kind of warning/note that told me how/where to do it, but I don’t remember where it was, or how I came to see it.

Anyway, I’ll let you know if I’m successful later. I just got online, so have some other things that need to be taken care of first.

Well, it’s working with Opera, though I don’t usually like having Opera installed because I usually find it annoying, but when you have to do it, you do it.

I just wish I could get the sound back with Firefox, but at least now I’m certain it’s a browser issue.

Thanks muchly @FedPete You are da man!

Hey @FedPete and @NP5 I figured out the problem, and how to fix it.

As it turns out when you’re viewing the video, one of the icons at the bottom right is a small “speaker” and if you hover over it, it will show a thick vertical line in either white (off) or red (on). I didn’t realize at first when I checked it, that the solid white vertical line above it was why it was off.

What’s surprising me now is, it only turns white if I click on it, and then a diagonal line goes through the speaker, so you would know it’s off. I wasn’t seeing that earlier, so it didn’t hit me that the white line wasn’t what I needed to see.

I just realized it wasn’t really off, just lowered to zero volume, which is why the speaker icon didn’t change to the one with the diagonal line through it. I just clicked on it and dragged upwards (choosing the volume level), and now it works again.

This time I’m DEFINITELY making a note . . . just in case it happens again.

pewww!
Probably an unattended mouse click or (hot)keystroke.

When working with Blender hotkeys, some strange combination switches my keyboard layout from EN to something else. Which gave me back then some headaches also …

Glad it’s solved.

lol wow I bet it did!

Well solved. Funny how we tend to assume it is something more complex than the sound is turned down.

I know, it just kept my mind reeling as to what it could possibly be.

When @FedPete mentioned changing the browser, it at least clicked that it was a browser issue, and not the video software, or the software my laptop uses to view videos.

Once I narrowed down the possibilities, I started checking everything out, and finally realized it was working, I had just “somehow” lowered the volume all the way. Boy am I ever glad that’s over with, and yes, before you ask, I DID make a note for future reference.

Make a note, to read old notes too!
I know I would fail to find any note.

Oh I’ve been making notes I call “Tidbits of Interest” for decades for every piece of software I’ve ever used, though mostly my 3D software, and I have a plain text editor, NoteTab Light (a free version of NoteTab), which allows me to have open files in it at all times, so all I need to do is scroll across the top “tabs” (like in a browser) to the one I want, and then search the file for what I’m looking for.

It saves the open files “open” when I close it at logoff time, and reopens them the next day. It’s really come in handy over the years (decades).

How terribly organised!
I have a few Notepad files. Use search function to see if I had a note related to the issue I am having. If I called it the same last time, if I spelled it the same. Um has a few flaws!

Yes, it’s the one time folks can legitimately call me obsessive, and get away with it. :grinning:

I need a tidy obsessive! I am an untidy obsessive.

If the cobweb is not in the way leave it. Clear a space and it only fills up again.

I always make notes. Writing down things, grouping them, will help you to remember and to rethink.
It is also a fact that handwritten notes help your memory. It is not that you re-read the notes, but you can remember it better.
