Just want to introduce myself…
My name is Steve and I am a Sr. Software Engineer who has worked in the industry for too long. After 42 years I decided to finally throw in the towel on corporate development and retired to work on my own projects.
I have always wanted to learn Blender since I have always had an interest in modeling science fiction scenes as well as develop strategic war games based on the original model popularized by TalonSoft in the 1990s And now John Tiller Software. This last comes from my life long interest in military history…
Hi Steve. Wish you luck in learning a new skill and on your projects. As a younger gamer, I’m curious if there are any more recent strategy games that you’ve enjoyed and would model your own after?
Hi Spencer:
Thank you for your kind thoughts…
I have only been interested in realistic, historical simulations in terms of game play and my own interest in such game development.
Though I have been a software engineer for many years and am now retired from the corporate world, I am still interested in pursuing this line of development since I have always had a deep interest in game development. The problem I find however, is that the development of strategy games (what we used to call war games) is still one of the most difficult aspects of game development around due to the lack of concrete documentation on the variety of subjects that are incorporated into such development. Even aviation sims have more information available for developers but understanding the physics can do one in.
This is why I am planning on making my code available as I succeed with each phase of my development… That is, if I succeed.
I used to buy my games from HPS Simulations and earlier from Talonsoft. However, HPS is no longer really active while Talonsoft closed its doors I believe in 2000 without any explanations.
John Tiller has since taken up the position as the top provider of accurate, historical war games based on hexagonal maps. He was one of the senior developers for Talonsoft and also now does simulation work for the US Air Force. His company is John Tiller Software, which is now also providing its game engine to other parties on a limited basis so that this genre can be taken further.
From my understanding, this type of game play is slowly reemerging in popularity.
