What a shame that such an exemplar Discord Community that used to be so polite and professionally managed is now devolving into just another divisive place for arguments and the mods are completely ok with it.
Cursing is now allowed, off-topic debates are now allowed, degrading other members is now allowed…
So thank you for all the courses, and for doing your best these past few years. I’ll forever be grateful for everything I learned but it’s time for me to go forever.
Please delete my forum account and all posts so I may move on, I keep getting tempted to go back to the good old days and interacting with the nice colleagues I found. Unfortunately the bad is outweighting the good, taking away my focus and motivation. Thank you for listening.

Realize I’m kicking a dead post here, but it was interesting to see I’m not alone in my experience. After my initial game jam post someone with a profile that includes “melting the snowflakes” said something incredibly rude.
Yeah I get it, people are going to be critical in this world. That’s why there are certain spaces you can share your learning experience. Clearly the gamedev tv discord server is not one of those places. I deleted all my posts and left.
Hi,
I’m sorry you had a negative experience. We have a lot of discord users (over 60k - I checked and 13k are online) and we do try and keep on top of users misbehaving. In the last year we’ve had maybe a few incidents so it is not the norm - I do wish you had pinged us Mods as we would have dealt with it swiftly and engaged with you as well.
The user in question - yes, we are all well aware of them and unfortunately based on our rules they know how to tread the line carefully but I myself have timed them out and warned them officially.
The mods have been actively discussing how to approach this, if more rules of conduct are needed and how we can actually make it friendly.
We are generally a very well behaved community (yes, I know, I’m a TA and also a Mod and have to say that, but seriously we are!!!) and we often engage in very serious game development topics - I have made some good friends here whom I regularly engage with and discuss all things game development.
Please do not judge us by one person as it doesn’t matter where you go, there will always be that one person sadly who attempts to ruin everyone’s fun.
If you want to reach out via discord, please let me know. I am happy to have a conversation with you.

Hi Brian,
I really appreciate your words and sharing your experiences with me. I went back and forth about removing my content from Discord, and later kicked myself about it. I have a pre-teen daughter, so I really do have thicker skin for such things.
I was caught off guard by a comment that I really didn’t expect, and you are right, I should have pinged someone about it when it happened. I think it’s difficult for me, and for a lot of people, to share creative works in any space, mostly out of fear. So, having a “harsh judgment” thrown at me in a more vulnerable time, when I am sharing those works, just didn’t sit well with me.
There are a lot of people on your Discord server, so I’m probably better off being in the community simply for my personal goals in game development. I will ease back into things as I continue to do courses here, but I will likely be a silent lurker for a good while.
Moderating so many users from so many backgrounds must be very challenging, and I think you are probably doing a better job than this thread conveys. So my apologies for piling on, so to speak. Thank you for your words of wisdom.

Rejoin the discord and reach out to me personally by DM. We can chat there. Honestly, I’ve been around for years and I have been a TA for 5(?!) years I think now. I think if you give it a chance, you’ll find there is a lot of decent people who will help you out. Of course it depends on the engine who they are but I tend to hang around in Unreal myself and the folks there are amazing.
Generally steer clear of the Lounge channel as that’s where all the trolls tend to hang out

I rejoined this afternoon and will continue to use it only for positive engagement and to post what I’m learning. I sent you a DM there today as well. I really appreciate you commenting on this thread and helping push me back into that community.

Following up, I’ve had good experiences being back in the community on Discord. I just overreacted a bit to one person when I was sharing something I had created. Sorry again for stirring up bad memories here. Overall, it has been safe to share in the Blender and Unreal channels for me, glad I came back!
