Select one edge of the default cube.

Press [ X ] -> Choose “Dissolve Edges”

Ta-daa - Wedge constructed. Now only select the bottom edge and move it out a bit to finish.

I did same exact thing. Only i scaled it to size first and then dissolved the edge.
As Mikey says there are usually several ways to do things in Blender. Two now mentioned in this thread. I suspect he chose his route in order to leave and demonstrate dissolving to the following lecture.
