Eraser issue: Add alpha channel to layer

If the eraser tool is erasing in the background colour instead of removing the alpha (and you wish it to do the latter), you can fix this by right-clicking on the layer in the layer’s list and choosing “Add Alpha Channel”. It will then erase alpha after that.

I was having that exact problem, thanks! Instead I erased the background (to background colour), then magic wand selected the background colour and then under colours tab found ‘colour to alpha’. Adding alpha channel is more efficient though.
