Dip pen

Nice work! Simple, yet elegant. I really like the font you used and the small engraving on the pens tip piece.

My goal is to make it look worn and used.
But it’s difficult. I see reference pictures, but difficult to apply.

It’s a study of texture nodes and texture painting (brushes, stencils, etc.)

Good one, I am waiting for your final render.

Looking good! Tried making a fountain pen once, didn’t turn out so good .

Texture paint blend modes and black and white stencil, it’s still difficult.
Now I have two types of dip pens. New and used.
I think a used (worn) version need still a next step of degradation.
But uncertain how to accomplish that.

Good work and a challenging aim.

Perhaps try adding another texture layered on the pens handle for worn out spots where the thumb and fingers would be while holding it? and maybe even sculpt in a few small dings? Definitely an interesting project, and good to learn with. Good luck man, Ill keep an eye out for the finished version!

Awesome! I can’t help you with any of your challenges here as i have no idea about it, but i can say that the brass tip of the used one looks a little strange, like some kind of tiger fur. It should probably still resemble it’s former brass state a little bit (also looking at your reference photo).

You’re completely right!
It was a quick and dirty solution. To see a black “used” nib as a global reference.

But more, because I don’t like the ‘used’ wood neither. Just black paint.
So I lost interest, waiting to get more insight in the way “old” and “used” stuff looks like.
Everybody, starting with Blender makes shiny glossy things. I like it also …
But you need to broaden your horizon. Make it a challenge for your self.

But you did! You see something out of the ordinary (your brain does … )
But I have the same feeling when I see other guys on the web, doing stuff.
But Blender is so versatile, that it’s very difficult to understand how people do some things. Without any explanation. Like working with texture nodes, for me magic. Like chemistry lessons on school. You mix these two together and look what happens. Also magic for me.

But I learn now to used them and I starting to understand it also. But it took me many many hours.

Don’t let it disturb you what other do. Work with your current knowledge and increase skills by challenges, YouTube, these courses (I did all three). And above all, keep having fun. If it doesn’t work, jump to the next.
