Can anyone tell me where I went wrong please?

Temple.blend (429.0 KB)

I think maybe I position the railings or the initial ramp in the wrong place but not sure

I suggest looking into the following areas.

  • Location of your origin points.
  • Location, Rotation, and Scale of your objects.
  • Dimensions of your first step.

I won’t tell you what I saw when I looked at your file cause I believe learning is best accomplished by doing.

Watch - Do - Teach

Thank you for your response - Whilst im keen to try and work this out for myself I’m not sure I know how to locate the origin points or how to look at the scale etc of the objects - isn’t there just one object there anyway?

Is it actually fixable or should I just start again with this one?

Thank you for your help though

You actually have four objects in your scene, and yes it is fixable. I’m away from my computer for the night but, I’ll grab some screenshots in the morning to show you what to look for.

Delete your ramp and your stairs. I think that the ramp make a little angle with the structure.

Okay going to give you a little more direction on whats happened and why.
When you made your model you adapated the railins (look at the video its level with the base of the pyramid)
This has affected your array modifer because the ramp angle is different it also appears twisted.

Now the fix. For a relatively simple model i would be tempted to restart but it can be fixedd by adjusting the array modifer relative offsets. I wont tell you the values but remember it might be small increments. This is how you can adjust to the current model you have without changing the original model.

Capricas sounds like he may have another method to fix the actual model itself so i wont steal their thunder on that

So, I actually disregarded the issues with the ramp and rails but I did see them as it appeared the real issue was that the stairs were not lined up.

here is my solution for the stairs…

first here is where you would look to see the scale and dimensions of an object. the location of the object is show just above the magnified portion.

Here is the issue with the stairs

and here is my solution…

While moving the pivot point and the origin were not “Necessary” to the fix, I find it much easier to work with models if the Origin is actually attached to the model rather than in a wildly different location and so far I have yet to find a need to put the pivot to the 3-D cursor which is often off on it’s own adventure 30 or 40 units from the object I’m working on.

The other issue I ran into with your file was that blender refused to accept keyboard input while it was open… If that’s an issue for you I would suggest resetting your User Preferences.

to fix the issue with the ramp being off angle, grab the edges at the bottom and slide them in the direction of the gap. you do have a bunch of excess geometry there but it’s an easy clean up…

Guys - Thank you kindly for all your help - I really appreciate you taking the time to point these things out to me.

So I took the bottom step of the pyramid and duplicated it (just the top and front faces). I scaled them down by .5 and then snapped them to the ramp. Once the first step was in place at the bottom of the ramp. I deleted the ramp and then made an array out of the one step and off-set it on the x by 1 and the z by 1. it ended up lining up perfectly.
