Just to get a feel within the community for another way for Unity students to participate amongst everyone.
To set the premise, we have a similar idea with the Blender community here, where we have weekly and monthly challenges, where at the start of the period there is a topic/theme and everyone who wants to participate creates their submission and posts it.
at the end of the period those who watch the thread get to vote of which one they like best, not necessarily based on technical, but progress and participation and having fun taking part
have a look, its a great way to engage and I like the idea.
The Blender Collab: Weekly Themed Gallery (Week 14: 2017)Creatures
So my thoughts to you…
Would you like to see a similar concept rolling for coding or Unity challenges?
Monthly/weekly?
it doesnt have to be a large topic, just something to get grey matter going.
for instance, try and get a cube changing to show a random colour every 3 seconds.
the idea being to get something small within C# or Unity that you dont use often and see what its all about and get a bit of practice in and learn along the way.
would you want a similar idea where the randomly selected contributor gets to choose the following periods challenge, or a set challenge every period for you to try.
just putting it out there… I dont mind setting a few to get the ball rolling, see what you all think?

it doesnt even have to be a challenge with a ‘winner’ so to speak.
it could (and probably more likely to be viable) a challenge to try and solve within the time period just for the fun of it, then just a random person from those who took part, picks the next challenge.
For me, absolutely yes!
We could even have the person announcing that the weekly/fortnightly/monthly challenge will need the use to use a certain coding idea (i.e. Procedural generation, recursion, lists, dictionaries, etc, etc).
Could always give people a link to an explanation of the coding idea before they start.
I definitely agree, a small project/game would be best. Good for the people to spend a few hours on for something simple, and if they had more time they can spend more time to make it bigger if they wanted, but the general target being small.
Is there a place we can get free assets from? Another idea could be that people are given specific assets that they could use as a starting point, just to get them on their way?
TL:DR - love the idea, I’m in!
yep things need to be small and accessible.
Its also borne from me playing hackerrank online, which has got me hooked with small daily challenges, and I think something similar would be nice for students to practice little bits to reinforce learning.
cheers for the interest @pokedev8 and thanks for the input
Hackerrank is really good IMO.
I’ve spent so much time working with Unity and trying to learn C# that way, that when I started with the Hackerrank challenges, I realized how little I actually knew about C#.
Really loved learning about dictionaries and recursion. Currently trying to get my head around nodes and linked lists. Really doing my head in, but if/when all this extra C# coding does sink it, it might be really, really useful for future Unity projects.

So I’ve been thinking about this topic for a while now, and wanted to revisit it.
Having sorted out my other priorities in life (job gotten, adapting to US etc, etc), I’ve found myself with a bit more free time to rethink ideas for this topic.
I’ve just remembered a few tutorials I started with, 3-4 years ago when I started learning about Unity (before CUD course on Udemy).
http://www.unity3dstudent.com
There’s this chap called Will Goldstone who created tutorials. The part I loved the most (and one which I wish he made more of, but I guess he had other things to do and had to leave the tutorial challenges etc) was that he created projects himself, and challenges students/users to replicate what he had done.
I remember back in the days trying out the challenges and really loving doing them.
Have a look @OboShape. Think it’s something we could try with the current students? I have a bit of free time till I start work (working on two unity projects atm) but I would definitely have time to organize some challenges for all to try?
Will post some ideas I might have for all later.
Actually, anyone else interested in joining in?

I like Wills stuff, nowadays hes moved onto RnD with unity. He used to head up the learn team with Mike and Adam.
When i get home on Wednesdays ill put a little something together to test the water…
