Blender Sec 1, Lesson 12 Challenge: Door - First original model

Here is a model of a door made for the Extra Activity Challenge in Section 1, Lecture 12. Roughly designed after my very own office door. It’s simple but a huge step forward from where I began when I started earlier today. Any constructive criticism is always appreciated! Thanks!

Constructive criticism time!

You can click the little magnet (and the arrows next to it!) to lock things to vertices, so they don’t spill over or not quite reach, as is the case with the frame of your doorl.

Soon, you’ll learn about extruding and inset, which will very easily create the doors pattern by only using one cube rather than 5

You can press 5 on Sketchfab to view topology (I am using it to find places to constructively criticise right now  lol)

I probably would’ve rotated the spheres to have the top facing outwards, rather than upwards (And then you can link both handles together to minimise vertices.)

You’ll see soon, but you can turn down how many edges there are on new shapes you add. This helps relieve your computer when playing with models. Even viewing on sketchfab, higher poly models can very easily lag even high end machines and their browsers.

Perhaps someone who’s been doing this since 2015 should be a bit gentler on someone who started today xD Anyhow, I’ve quickly made you an example of how your door will look by the Chess Set section. This is also only 122 vertices, rather than 554

Aaaand a topology view as well

Remember that the most important thing is that you don’t stop trying new things or experimenting. I did, and now I’m sitting at work making doors rather than tidying cables like I’m supposed to be :expressionless: lol

I think it is good for where you are in the course. Most of what you need to know to make it better, you will learn very soon. Having said that, my only criticism is more of suggestion. Once you have learnt new techniques come back to your model and see what you could have done differently and how it will help. I find blender to be very useful, but also very frustrating at times, so be sure not to quit. Even when it feels like you should.

Good luck! I look forward to seeing more of your work.

Wow! Great feedback! Very thorough and gives me a glimpse into what I need to think about as I improve. Thanks a mil. I think I’ll give this another shot after section 2 perhaps and see if I can utilize the advice I got here and the next principles that are taught. I fully plan on finishing this course so I’ll stay in touch on this board. I’m glad I posted this. Thanks again!

Is a nice looking door, especially if you are just starting out learning 3D modeling.

McFuzz and Tim are correct continue with the course, which will teach you different commands and ways of creating things…give you a wide variety of tools you can use to make your creations. Once you have the basic down, let your imagination run wild and experiment with different methods that fit your style and particular workflow. Blender (any modeling software for that matter) is very complex and powerful, which for me has been very scary for years till I took the course. Is the best course I have found and Michael teaches you a lot. Just have to discipline yourself to go through it, LOL, I am still slowly slogging through it myself.

And, has to agree with McFuzz. When you learn Extruding and Insetting in future lessons , it will help you with this door and other things. If you look at the back side of the door closely, you can see where your pieces meet one another and really takes away from the door. Extruding, Inserting, and learning to merge vertices will remedy this as McFuzz shows in his example.

I wholeheartedly agree with Tim. When you learn new things, go back and look at some of your previous work and try modeling them again with what you have learned. You will be amazed what you can do!

Keep up the good work and share it! Ask questions, participate here in the forums and help others. Is a great helpful community even after you have finished the course!
