Thanks Dwayne! I realised I actually missed the bit in the tutorial I followed that said I should use the hair BSDF, and I used the regular BSDF instead. Somethingās definitely not quite right, so I want to come back and redo the fur with the proper thing - but Iām amazed how far you can get with just the regular settings.
Definitely - the back wall needs a little jazzing up, but I want to keep it all at bay a bit until the central figure is in, so that he pulls all the focus. Seriously regretting not retopologising that kitty, my computer is starting to sweat a bit!
So pretty much redid the cat (Now Stinkeye Kitty) and made him into a much lower poly model. Somehow managed to apply the high res vertex paint which made a good fur coat - but the hair is still beyond me; if I use the hairBSDF I lose all the colour and everything goes black. Still need to pose kitty but next up add the main character and then this scene is done.
Nearly there, just a little more lipstick on this pig and Iām done. Not sure if I should have rather rigged and posed the main character instead of modelling him in action, but I made the cat ready to rig so itās both ways with this one. @RayMobula - definitely brightening up the room has made a huge difference!

Just me being silly probably, but, I wonder if there is a way for the painting on the wall to show the camera output at any time. So it changes to be the image you chose to render. Probably some time loop impossibility. lol.
Could be done by hand render out a shot, use it as the painting image then re render the shot.
Love that idea, but still way out of my level - but would make a really good transitional film
In software like Davinci Resolve Fusion you can use a camera as a projector. The same might be true in Blender.

Not sure if a ālive viewā is possible. The mentioned solution has a delay of one frame.
They also discuss @NP5 's approach, to render the image, and import it as a texture. Like the TV guy we built in the Blender foundation course.

That would be awesome - if I made a little tv on his desk or something that captures the view from another angle. It would be great if I animated the scene, but with it being static I could take a still from another angle and just set it to a screenā¦ Rabbit holes, Ray - there are sooo many things to explore. I havenāt even scratched animation yet, I still need Bob to get into his car! Thanks for this info though, Iāll go check it out. Today I want to finish up the main character, thereās a looong way to go still
You can render multiple scenes (with different cameras) in Blender and āmergeā them in the compositor to generate the final scene.

On a different note, Iām having a problem with my glass panes, if anyone can help Iād be hugely grateful.
Iāve attached two shots, one with the panes hidden and one with them visible. They work great as transparencies, you can see everything outside but the sunlight is blocked out coming in.
Iāve tried with the regular BSDF and the glass one, IOR is at 1.045, transmission at 1.00 - but Iām obviously missing something. Iāve tried it as a plane and as a cube but still no joy. Any help would be welcome!
In the inspector, have you tried changing Materialā>Settingsā>Shadow Mode to None? I ran into something like this not long ago and found that to be very counter-intuitive.
Sadly no joy with that, but I did find the backspace culling button which Iāve been looking for (forgotten what I wanted it for though!) I tried all the buttons but this looks waaay above my level so Iām stabbing in the dark a bit. If I chuck out the window panes nobody would notice, but Iād like to find the solution.

- I would still investigate the idea of BH67 to do something with shadows (modes), not only in the material but also on the (EEVEE) light properties.
Iāve been using Cycles, and last night (after adding all that hair) I got my first out of memory message. Managed to sort it out but this scene is getting so top heavy - and in the middle of it all I decided to update to Version 4.2 I tried the AGX (?) rendering mode and fiddled a bit there, but the truth is I really need to go back to basics and learn what Iām doing properly. Iām finishing his shoes up and then I reckon itās back to the courses for a bit. Iām trying to find a comprehensive e-book that bridges beginner to intermediate; the problem with so many Youtube videos is I have a gazillion half-watched ones but it would be great to find something that can teach all of those settingsā¦ if you have any ideas, please let me know!
In general, when you find yourself in intermediate territory for a thing, itās hard to find comprehensive resources because any topic you dive into at that level is doing exactly that: diving into it. In detail. Make a comprehensive resource for that, and youāll need an ox-drawn wagon to move it around.
Or you post it on a website and call it the Blender manual =)
Joke aside, I think your best bet is going to be to try and focus on one major discipline at a time, because Blender is broad enough that it warrants that (I have almost 50 pages of notes from Grantās beginner course alone. Yes, I am a bit nuts). Considering what youāre trying to achieve here, try looking specifically for resources on render settings, scene setup, etc., and without this project in mind, just gather ideas about whatās possible. Before too long, youāll connect many of the dots on your own that way, because youāll be defeating the whole ānot knowing what you donāt knowā thing.
I had many e-books, but very old Blender verions. Problem was that those books were very difficult to follow, very technical in details how things work in Blender . In stead of how you get thing done in Blender. It is nice to know how Blender calculated light, but useful as a beginner.
If you are using Cycles, then I will think about your problem. Probably Iāve encountered this one also. But no hint yet (sorry).

- Also dont use immediately a glass material. Something transparency /translucency is just enough. ā What do you expect to see if there is glass in it? Reflections, dirt, tint ā¦
Thanks so much to both of you, at least my problem makes sense and I completely agree, focusing on one area at a time and learning as much about it as thoroughly as possible is a much better than diving straight into particle systemsā¦ Basically Iām like a kid in a candy shop at the moment, but right after this pic is finished Iām going to do the Blender Environment Course, and sit still and learn for a bit. I think Iām starting to skip some important groundwork thatāll trip me up later if I donāt have a rock solid understanding.
Your help and this forum is amazing though, without it Iād be totally lost!
And this is pretty much it for this one, I think. Iāve learned tons along the way, trying to include as many new concepts as I reasonably could and finding out just how far I have to go. Thereās a lot I thatās far from perfect here, but time to move on. I think back to the courses next, for some proper grounding, and Iām also looking forward to a Collab attempt!
