is there no magic wand in Gimp?

Um, yes, it’s called the Fuzzy Select tool. Its shortcut is U and its icon is… a magic wand. Its behaviour probably varies a bit from Photoshop’s.

I took the geometric pattern from the first part of this section and used the eraser to remove the white from it. Then, just for fun (and contrast), I started over and removed the black from it.

Here’s the house with the eraser.

Took a while to get a grip on it because I needed to set the layer to have alpha background as it was filled in with white before I could delete the white.
