@ben on mobile, this video works fine but on desktop it just skips the video and goes on to your next lecture.

Drone Patrol Gameplay Video Demonstration

Play Drone Patrol (WebGL or Windows x64 download)

Please have a peek at the current state of my “Boost” game, and let me know if you find any bugs, or have any other constructive criticism.

Backstory

You’re a remote drone pilot for an off-world research facility. The scientists have a penchant for disaster, so now it’s up to you to clean up the mess they’ve created. You can’t ask for hazard pay, because the Company buys the drones, but on the other hand, you also don’t die. You may find you get yourself fired if you destroy too many drones though – they are a bit fragile (and expensive!). Good luck!

Keys

thrust - w or up-arrow
rotate - a/d or left/right-arrow

gravity - , or . to reduce or increase gravity
reverse gravity - /

pause - escape
exit - x (doesn’t apply to WebGL version)
stop/start music - m (*bug: if music stopped, will re-start when the next level loads… hit M twice to stop)

Goal

Collect the orbs to reveal the exit portal, and get to the next level.

Game mechanic

Your drone gains mass over time, but you can control gravity! Increase it, reduce it, even reverse it! Your score is based on the difficulty, so if you go zero-G you won’t earn regular points, but not everybody plays for points anyway!

Future development

I’m contemplating if it might be fun to have a variety of drones, which can be purchased with the credits earned while collecting orbs… and perhaps the orbs themselves can be used for upgrades?

My wife has suggested that un-claimed orbs should begin to vanish over time. A related mechanic could be to give bonus points for finishing a level within a specific time limit, but I’m also open to other ideas as well!

Boost!

This is supposed to be difficult - at least from watching my brother and his friend’s streams of their play through.

My intention was to aim for difficulty within the levels and after watching a few others play my game, I have decided to restart on the current level upon death, instead of restarting from the beginning or going back a level.

I have added a physics based “see-saw” / weight system to some obstacles as well as taking inspiration from a level on Super Mario 3D World on the Wii U, by adding shadow elements to two of the levels.

I feel small turns could use some work in the future, as they are too jumpy/instant and I plan to add new levels for greater challenge and level flow on return to this project after progressing on the course!

Keys
Space = Boost
A = Turn Left
D = Turn Right
