An old project revived because of this course

My name is Neason. I’m a full time EMT with a family working on this in my spare time. This is a short video that introduces myself. My expectations of the course and an old project that I am using as a jumping off point for the course work.
Some things will be added to the project some redesigned others improved. Hope you enjoy the video.

There is also a longer video that goes over different topics short term goals, game design concepts, other development ideas. Anyone interested may go to the Utube page and check it out. Link provided below to my utube page.

I’m really glad you shared this, gave me hope that I might be able to do something similar. Great work, and hope you share more updates as they come!

Ty for the kind reply. Part of the intent was to show what can be accomplished with patience, persistence, and a good deal of research on your own time. I believe with those things and this course to give you expert guidance you’ll be able to achieve all that I have done plus quite a bit more. I look forward to seeing you proudly showing off your own work sometime in the near future. Remember this is a marathon not a sprint just keep moving forward.

Thank you for Sharing Neason. It was nice to see you work. I was also encouraged by some of the mechanics that you have shown (roof disappearing when you enter a house, opening doors, etc). I wish you the best with your game design progress.

Thank you for the reply and the feedback. I had considered doing a video to show how I did certain things like the rooftops and such if there was some interest in seeing how it was done. I think part of this course and the forums should be for us to share ideas and give feedback and help one another out. Which will help make all of our projects better in the end.

This looks great! Very cool.

TYVM! Glad you liked it.

As a side note. I’m about to finish the first section. Considering a new video depending on the extent of the changes. Should I put it up here or in another topic? Suggestions, thoughts criticism always welcome on anything.

I think a new thread would be better if there are many different changes.

Ty for the input. Although there won’t be a lot of changes I think it will be a new topic under the section 1 wrap up lecture. Since you checked in and reminded me I will also share the code for the roof mechanic. I saw that was an idea you expressed interest in. It should be up by the weekend sooner if I can sneak it in around work.

You’ve got quite a good start on an RPG there - very inspiring!

I am hoping to implement the feature you have where the ceiling of buildings fades out when you enter them. Was that very difficult to get working?

Firstly ty for the post and interest.

As far as implementing the roof mechanic goes for simple square buildings it’s rather easy. An empty game Object to contain the parts of the roof you want to fade/disappear. A collider componet on the empty set as a trigger. Also tag the hero Player. The last part the code will have OnTriggerEnter and OnTriggerExit functions and an if statement that checks if for the player tag. On trigger enter you disable the empty game object thus disabling all the child objects, your roof and on trigger exit you re enable the empty and you roof reappears.

That’s the simple base structure. More complex buildings like an L, or T shape require a little more work. Just as getting them to fade instead of simply disappear.

The first will require multiple overlapping box colliders and a counter. Every time you enter a collider you increment the count when you leave you decrement the count. You set up the colliders in such a way that your counter will only reach 0 when you exit the building completely. Now the counter will be the condition for whether the roof appears of not.

The second ploblem requires a for each loop that goes through the child objects, the roof parts and gets the material component. It will then get the color variable and reduce the alpha which will cause it to be more transparent. If you make them alpha zero it will effectively disappear.

This may seem more or less difficult depending on your familiarity and comfort with unity and c#. If you need help with anything feel free to ask and I shall do my best.

Thanks for that information. I seem to remember seeing a video on it a couple years back, now that you describe it. It is certainly helpful!

Glad it helped enjoy the course

Really impressive! As someone just starting out this is very inspiring.

tyvm Jon. I’ve nearly finished section 2 at this point. I can absolutely confirm you will be very pleased with this course. It’s already helped me make many improvements under the hood as well as reinforced and extended my knowledge of game and level design. It can be alot to take in but we’ll worth the journey.
