AMD FirePro D300 2048 MB on Mac

Hope I’m in the right area to ask about this. If not, please move my post where it should be.

I’m learning Blender on my Mac Pro (Late 2013). I saw a video about using the graphic card instead of the CPU to shorten the render time. I gave it a try, but it seemed like nothing was happening and when I tried to cancel the render, Blender just hanged in there with nothing happening. I waited for about two minutes before forcing Blender to quit. The scene was the one that shows up when Blender starts up.

I’m wondering if my graphic card is compatible with Blender. It did show up in the options, but I don’t know if Blender just lists what’s on the computer or if it will hide the cards that it can’t use.

Both graphic cards are AMD FirePro D300 2048 MB. In case it makes a difference, I’m running OS X Yosemite and Blender 2.78c.

I know, I should update to OS X Sierra, but I’m concerned I’ll lose the ability to use Adobe CS6 if I do and I use Photoshop and Illustrator on a regular basis.
